What to Ask a Painter Before You Agree to the Job

The right questions before you hire a painter save you from vague quotes, surprise charges, and work that doesn't hold up.

Hiring a painter shouldn't feel like a gamble. The difference between a job that goes smoothly and one that doesn't usually comes down to what was made clear — or wasn't — before anyone picked up a brush. Here are the questions worth asking before you commit.

Is the Price Fixed or an Estimate That Could Change

This is the first one to ask, and listen carefully to the answer. "Estimate" means different things to different painters. For us, the quote we give you is the price — it covers the job as described and nothing gets added on the day. Some painters quote low to win the work and adjust the price once they're on site. Ask directly whether the number you're being given is what you'll pay.

What Does the Prep Include

A paint job is only as good as the surface it goes on. Ask what the painter does before any paint is applied. On an interior job, that should include filling holes and cracks, sanding where needed, and protecting floors and furniture. On an exterior, it should include pressure washing, scraping loose paint, caulking gaps, and priming bare surfaces. If prep isn't mentioned, ask about it specifically.

Who Will Be on Site Doing the Work

Some painting companies sell the job and then subcontract it to whoever is available. Ask whether the crew doing the estimate is the crew that will show up to paint. We keep the same crew on your project from the first day to the last — it matters for consistency and for accountability.

Will You Need to Move Anything or Be Home

A good painter should be clear about what's expected of you. We move and cover furniture and protect floors as part of the job. You shouldn't be scrambling to empty rooms the night before we arrive. Ask whether the quote includes furniture protection, and whether you need to be home during the work or not.

What Happens if Something Gets Damaged

Accidents are rare but they happen. Ask how damage is handled before you hire. You want a clear, straightforward answer — not a shrug.

Is There Colour Help Available

Picking paint colours is harder than most people expect, and the wrong choice is an expensive thing to live with. We have Aryn in-house for colour consulting, which means you can talk through your options with someone who does this regularly before any paint goes on the wall. Ask whether the painter you're considering can offer any support there, or whether you're on your own with the colour fan.

How Long Will the Job Take

Get a realistic timeline before you commit, not a rough guess. A good painter will give you a start date, a projected end date, and let you know what affects that estimate — weather for exterior work, drying time between coats, and so on.

What's Not Included in the Quote

Ask this one directly. A quote that leaves certain surfaces or prep work out can look competitive until you compare it to a quote that includes everything. Make sure you know exactly what the price covers.

The right painter will answer all of this without hesitation. If you've got a job coming up and want a straight conversation about what it involves, call us or send a message and we'll get you a proper estimate.
